The Best ATELIER Playa Mujeres Review for 2024

Atelier Playa Mujeres is a luxury all-inclusive resort in Cancun. It has quickly become one of the most popular adult-only resorts, but is it worth the hype? You’ll want to read this post, it’s the ultimate Atelier Playa Mujeres review from a travel agent.

ATELIER Playa Mujeres- Review of the Luxury Resort

As a professional travel advisor, I help my client’s vacation dreams come to life. Over the years, many travelers have asked for help planning an adult-only vacation at an all-inclusive resort. The vacations range from groups of women celebrating milestone birthdays to destination weddings and honeymooners. No matter the type of trip, we go through a consultation, where I ask them what their dream vacation looks like, what type of experience they want to have and so many other questions. Then I get to work playing matchmaker and determine resort options that would be the best fit. More often than not, there is one resort that always makes the top 3, Atelier Playa Mujeres.

Since opening in 2019, it has been a popular resort for many travelers seeking a luxury experience while enjoying the benefits of an all-inclusive resort (believe it or not, those two things do not usually go hand-in-hand). Guests of the Atelier expect everything to be top notch. They want delicious food, craft cocktails, impeccable service, and a beautifully maintained property. After 5 years, does it still live up to the hype? I needed to find out personally, especially since it is one of my top-selling resorts for adults. So, I packed my bags and set out for a 5-night stay at the Atelier. This post goes into detail on my experience. Keep reading for an inside look at ATELIER Playa Mujeres– review from a professional travel agent.

All About ATELIER Playa Mujeres

Atelier Playa Mujeres Resort

The Atelier resort is located in a gated community of Playa Mujeres about 45 minutes from the Cancun Airport. It sits on a beautiful stretch of white sand overlooking the Caribbean Sea and a championship golf course. As mentioned above, it is an all-inclusive, adult-only resort. However, it is one of the few adult-only resorts for guests 16 years of age and older. Another unique feature is that the resort is dog friendly and has a PET-IT program.

The 5 star resort is inspired by Mexican art and design. Finishes are a combination of marble accents, plush avant-garde style furniture and wood accents. It’s refreshingly modern and boho-chic all at the same time.

It has a calmer and more chill vibe. I would not recommend this resort to anyone looking for a stereotypical Cancun party atmosphere. Yes, people let loose and have a good time, but there are no wild contests or foam parties.

It’s a great resort for conventions and has an on-site state-of-the-art convention center. In fact, when I was there over Memorial Day, there was a 400-person convention. The property is big enough that even with such a large group, I never felt they were overtaking the resort. There is also an on-site chapel for Catholic ceremonies and Sunday service. Additionally, it is a fantastic resort for a destination wedding with different ceremony and reception sites and packages.

ATELIER Playa Mujeres- Review of the Guest Rooms and Suites

Atelier Playa Mujeres Suite

There are nearly 600 suites divided between three different buildings. There are two different categories of rooms, junior suites and Inspira suites. All rooms include a large luxurious bathroom with double sinks, a rain shower, and a large soaking tub, Molton Brown bath amenities, 24-Hour room service, concierge services, and an upscale minibar with premium liquors, wines, and snacks.

In addition to the above amenities, guests staying in the Inspira suites, receive early check-in, an upgraded rolling bar, champagne welcome, access to areas of the resort that are reserved for Inspira guests only (beach area, lounge, pools), personalized butler service, complimentary access to the MERA Business Lounge at the Cancun International Airport and so much more.

During my stay in May, I selected an Inspira Junior Suite with a Swim-Out pool. It was beyond luxurious. I loved the large patio area with a palapa bed and found myself there most afternoons with an espresso. One of my favorite parts about an all-inclusive resort is the in-room Nespresso machine, perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up. There wasn’t much of a view since the room was on the first floor, but truthfully I wasn’t bothered by it. One thing to know about the swim-out rooms is that the swim-out areas are all connected to the other swim-outs on your floor. There are other room categories for travelers looking for more privacy.

Each room also has a hair dryer, scale (no thank you), a beach bag, bathrobes and slippers. There is ample storage space in the closet with plenty of hangers and drawers, and a safe that is large enough to fit my laptop. The hair dryer in my room was not working, but they quickly replaced it.

ATELIER Playa Mujeres- Review of Food and Drinks

Atelier Playa Mujeres- Wine Bar Terrace

The best part of any all-inclusive is the unlimited access to food and drinks (alcohol and non-alcohol). Unfortunately, all-inclusive resorts are not known for having the highest quality food and beverages. The Atelier is one resort that is an exception. At the Atelier, the all-inclusive package includes access to 13 restaurants, 2 coffee shops, and 13 bars. An additional restaurant, Maria Dolores by Edgar Nuñez, is complimentary for Inspira guests staying 7 or more nights (guests staying 6 or fewer nights receive a 50% discount).

All of the food is fabulous, and not just by all-inclusive standards. The quality is exceptional by any standards. There are also mixologists at the bars ready to make you a custom craft cocktail. I wish I had time to visit each restaurant as I was so impressed with everything I ate and drank during my visit. I guess I’ll just have to go back! Reservations are required for dinner and can be made at kiosks throughout the resort or on the web app. Pro-tip- if there is a restaurant you want to try but didn’t get a reservation, stop by the restaurant in the evening and see if they have a table available. It’s not uncommon for people to cancel or simply not show up.

El Suspiro

I visited El Suspiro a few times during my stay. The first time was for lunch while I waited for my room. While you wait for your food to arrive, they bring a bowl of fresh chips with guacamole, pico de gallo and salsa. For lunch, I had the tuna tostada and the shrimp cobb salad. Everything was incredible.

While lunch was fresh, delicious and light, the breakfast was the real showstopper. To start, they have someone stop by the table with a basket full of warm pastries and bread, I opted for the concha. The menu had a variety of dishes- fresh fruit plates, pancakes, omelets, chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, and so many delicious options. Thankfully, a friend joined me on the second day, and we were able to try many different items.

Mercado 19

Another popular spot for breakfast is Mercado 19, a breakfast buffet. And in my opinion, rivals any Vegas buffet. There are several different stations- fresh fruit and yogurt, fresh juices, pastries, build-your-own omelet/quesadilla/eggs/etc. station, salad bar, and so much more. To be honest, I was a little overwhelmed but in the best way! My favorite item was the Mexican hot chocolate. It was divine, even though it was 90 degrees outside.

Cilento

Atelier Playa Mujeres All-Inclusive dining

I came to Cilento the first evening of my visit. This was before my friend arrived. Even though I didn’t have a reservation, they were able to seat me within a few minutes. Cilento is the Italian restaurant, and as an Italian, I will say I am pretty picky. I was so impressed. The focaccia that is brought out as the starter was delicious and fabulous with the sundried pesto. My first course was the burrata caprese which paired nicely with the Sauvignon Blanc. I tried the lobster pasta for my second course and was impressed with how perfectly al dente the pasta was and the amount of lobster. For the third course, I had the sea bass which was served with a mixture of tomatoes, potatoes, olives, and spinach in a garlic olive oil sauce. It was incredible. Dessert was simple with a lovely, creamy affogato.

I have heard the pizzas at Cilento are also fantastic, and if I had been with a few other people, one or two would have been great as an appetizer. They have a pasta dish, on the menu, that is made tableside in a cheese wheel. However, I’ve heard it’s not very good, and more about the presentation and spectacle.

Cala di Luna

Cala di Luna was my favorite restaurant for dinner. I ate here twice actually (I would have tried Bikini Azul but it was closed on my last night). The atmosphere, food and service exceeded my expectations. I truly felt as if I had been transported to the Mediterranean. I dined here the second evening, and by then a few more friends had joined. It was so fun to try a variety of dishes and share with each other. We loved the different dips and bites that were brought out as starters. The standout dishes were the grilled octopus and sea bass (as I’m typing this, I realized I was all about the sea bass on this trip!). To be honest, I did not find the shrimp paella to be that great. It lacked flavor and the rice was overcooked. With that said, they did not skimp on the amount of shrimp. For dessert, I had the baklava. It was sinfully delicious.

Takeshi

Atelier Playa Mujeres Restaurants and Bars

Takeshi is an Asian fusion restaurant on site. We ate more than our fair share this evening, but everything was so good! The sushi rolls were fresh and flavorful, and there were plenty of options to try. This evening was just me and my friend, Ali and we ordered (and ate) 4 different rolls. We also tried the Malaysian soup and the Thai salad. We shared both and they were so flavorful and fresh. The pad Thai I ordered was phenomenal, as was Ali’s Mongolian beef. We devoured everything we ordered, so needless to say this was the only restaurant we did not try dessert.

Los Abrazos

The Atelier has one steakhouse, Los Abrazos. It is the hardest restaurant to get reservations. My advice is to wake up early to watch the sunrise and make your reservations on your way to the beach.

I’m from Kansas, and we are beef eaters. I love a good quality steak and am particular about how I like it cooked. Despite all the incredible food I’d had, my expectations were not very high. Los Abrazos was a nice surprise. To be fair, it was not the best quality steak I had ever had, and it could have used a bit more salt. However, it was cooked perfectly, and the quality while not Prime, was still very good. My favorite part about Los Abrazos is the salad bar. After you order your appetizers and entrees, you can go to the salad station and make a plate. There are numerous different bread options, a variety of delicious cheeses and charcuterie, prepared salads, and plenty of fresh veggies and lettuce varieties to build your own salad.

We had to be careful not to fill up too much. We had ordered a few different appetizers- empanadas, oysters Rockefeller, and tuna tartare. All of that in addition to our entrees, and then dessert. Thankfully, the dessert sizes are small. Even then, I still couldn’t finish the cheesecake I ordered. It was wonderful and not too sweet, but I was just too full to finish!

Alba

Alba is the resort’s healthy option, and it is located directly across from the fitness center. I only went here once after a morning workout. The juice I had was wonderful. It was made with spinach, pineapple, cucumber, and apple, it was very refreshing. All the juices are made fresh to order.

Piccolo Bistro

Atelier Playa Mujeres Wine Bar

Piccolo Bistro was my favorite place to go before dinner. As a wine lover, I am always looking for somewhere to do a wine tasting and enjoy a cheese board. Piccolo is that place. It’s located on an outdoor terrace behind the lobby bar. Most of the wine they serve is wine that you can get at any other bar. However, they serve a Sauvignon Blanc that was specially made for the Atelier. You can get it by the glass at Piccolo or purchase it by the bottle at other restaurants around the resort.

ATELIER Playa Mujeres- Review of NUUP Spa

Atelier Playa Mujeres NUUP Spa

One of my favorite ways to treat myself on vacation is to visit the spa for a massage. NUUP Spa at the ATELIER is one of the best spas I’ve ever been. My experience started 90 minutes before the massage. It was an hour and a half of hydrotherapy circuit. The hydrotherapy pools had different jets to focus on different areas of your body. Additionally, they have a sensations shower, steam room, and sauna.

The massage itself was beyond fabulous. I prefer a deep tissue massage. Usually, when I go to spas for massages, they aren’t as deep as I like. This was not the case in my experience at NUUP Spa. My therapist did a great job finding the knots and kinks and working them with the perfect amount of pressure.  While the massage is pricier than back home, it was 100% worth every penny, and as an Inspira guest, I received a 20% discount.

ATELIER Playa Mujeres- Review on Activities and Entertainment

I mentioned earlier that the Atelier has a more laid-back and chill vibe, this is not the resort where people party all day and night. This does not mean that it’s not a fun time. There is plenty of fun to be had at the Atelier, and much of it is included at no extra cost.

Beach and Pools

Atelier Playa Mujeres Pools

Let’s start with the obvious- beach and pools! The Atelier has one massive hot tub, 2 pools that are included for all guests, and 2 pools that are only for Inspira guests. 3 of the 4 pools have swim-up bars. The only pool that doesn’t is the Inspira Rooftop infinity pool, but with the stunning view, I did not miss having a swim-up bar. There are plenty of beach chairs surrounding the pool. I never saw anyone struggle to find a place for the day. Additionally, they have a few cabana beds, which are snatched up pretty quickly. Thankfully, I was up early every morning and was able to secure a pergola bed without any problems.

There are also casual restaurants nearby each swimming pool, which makes grabbing a quick bite for lunch really easy. I was so impressed with the poolside service. The staff was quick, friendly, and attentive, I hardly had time to finish one drink, before they were ready for me to order another! I spent most of the trip at the main pool, but on the last day, I went to the Inspira Rooftop pool. It was a nice change of pace- quiet, fewer people and they had a totally different food menu.

The beach is stunning- white sand with turquoise-blue water. I didn’t encounter any seaweed this visit, which was awesome. Plenty of beach chairs and pergola beds are available, and there is a section for Inspira guests only. There is also beachside service for food and drink, which I didn’t utilize on this trip. Instead, I opted to sit at one of the two swing bars.

Daytime Activities

Atelier Playa Mujeres review of the fitness center

During the day, guests can choose from a bunch of different activities. They have bike tours each morning, as well as yoga classes and other fitness classes. I did not participate in any of the group classes, but I did utilize the fitness center. The Atelier has one of the best fitness centers I’ve ever seen at a hotel or resort. There are plenty of cardio machines, free weights, and other equipment. It is really clean and updated, which is important to me.

Other daytime activities include art workshops, tequila tastings, beach volleyball, and more. All of these are a part of the all-inclusive package and are free activities. There is also an on-site golf course. Rounds of golf are an additional fee unless you are an Inspira guest staying 7 nights or more. I chose not to participate in any of these activities on this visit so I can’t speak to them personally. However, I have had clients golf here, and they said it was a great course. I mean, it is a Greg Norman course!

Evening Activities

Atelier Playa Mujeres Evening Entertainment

The evening entertainment is just my speed- nothing too wild. There are several different bars around the property. My two favorites were Bar de la Calle and El Cielo. By day, El Cielo is a private rooftop terrace (with a bar and infinity pool) for Inspira guests. At 6 pm, it turns into a martini bar for all guests to enjoy. They typically have live music or a DJ in the evenings and there are a few lounge areas to sit. Bar de la Calle is another open-air bar, close to a few of the dinner restaurants. The mixologists here are incredible- seriously I had the best Caipirinha of my life here. There are also various shows and a nightclub. We went to the nightclub once, but it was pretty empty, so we went back out to Bar de la Calle. Everything seems to wind down around midnight, so it’s not the place to go if you want to party until the morning. For me, the Atelier had the perfect vibe.

ATELIER Playa Mujeres Review and Final Thoughts

Hotel Atelier Playa Mujeres Review

From the moment you arrive, you are greeted with a cool lavender towel, a glass of crisp Champagne, and a cheerful employee saying “Welcome home,” to the fabulous food available around every corner. From the kind employees who place their hands over their hearts as you pass each other in the hall, to the incredible scent that wafts through the lobby and the stunning design that integrates Mexican culture and modern simplicity. The Atelier is the epitome of a luxury all-inclusive resort.  So, to answer my initial question- is the Atelier Playa Mujeres still worth the hype? Yes, absolutely.

I like the idea that, while it is adult only, sixteen and up are allowed and while it is appropriately sophistiated, I can take my dog! All of this sounds like an ideal balance to me.

Like you say, all inclusive resorts don’t always have the best reviews when it come to food. Your assurance that Atelier is the exception is very important to most, and especially to myself and my family.

I’m addiing Atellier to my list of potential destinations.

Great review! I have never been to an all inclusive resort, so I would not know what to expect, but food (quality) would be one of my concerns, having done enough corporate dos in (fairly upmarket) resorts with terrible food. Thank you so much for sharing, I think as I get a little older, I would definitely consider an all inclusive resort but would be pretty picky, and this one looks really nice. Just a question: is is a problem that alcohol is included? Coming from a country with a big drinking culture and having lived in a country with an even bigger drinking culture, how they make sure people don’t get blinding drunk?
