The Best Resorts in Riviera Maya for Adults Only Vacations

The Riviera Maya is the perfect place for an adults-only getaway. From the beautiful white-sand beaches and turquoise-blue waters to the luxury hotel options and the multitude of fun activities to experience, it’s a destination for everyone. The best resorts are found here, whether you are planning a romantic getaway, bachelor(ette) party, or celebrating with a group of friends. In recent years, however, there has been an explosion of resort options. It can understandably be hard to determine which resort is best for your trip. As a professional travel advisor, I have planned numerous adult-only vacations here and traveled to the Riviera Maya quite a bit myself. Keep reading for the inside information on all of the best resorts in Riviera Maya for adults.

A List of the Best Resorts in Riviera Maya for Adults

As I mentioned above there are so many resorts to choose from and with so many options it’s hard to figure out the best resort for your trip. Some resorts cater to romance, others are very lively with a party vibe, and some are perfect for wellness. Below I’m going to discuss some of the best resorts in Riviera Maya for adults, and what type of trip they’re best suited for.

Hotel Xcaret Arte- Best for Adventurous Adults

Xcaret Arte is one of the best resorts for adults in Riviera Maya

Xcarte Arte is a gorgeous resort located in Playa del Carmen. It’s the perfect adults-only resort option for adults who like to stay super active. The concept of the resort isn’t just all-inclusive, it’s an all fun inclusive- adults only resort. When you book a room at Xcarte Arte, you have unlimited access to all of the Xcarte Parks in Cancun and Riviera Maya. Parks like Xel-Há, Xplor Fuego, Xenses and more will give guests over 200 experiences of fun and adventure.

Of course, you don’t even have to leave the resort if you don’t want to, there is plenty to do on the stunning grounds. For starters, the resort is called Arte because it showcases different artistic styles of Mexican culture. Different buildings on the property highlight the different art, and guests are encouraged to sign up for the classes where they can create their own art pieces.

In addition to art classes, guests can kayak and paddle board in the coves which feed directly into the Caribbean Sea. The resort also has several different pools, including an infinity pool with breathtaking views.

Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya- Best for Beach Lovers

Secrets Akumal is the best resort in the Riviera Maya for beach lovers

Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya is located on one of the most spectacular beaches in the Yucatan Peninsula. It’s picture-perfect- crystal clear waters, towering palm trees, and soft white sand beaches. Akumal means “place of turtles in Mayan” and the sea turtles are in the bay year-round. The resort is a AAA Five Diamond resort and is one of the most luxurious all-inclusive resorts in the area.

The Secrets brand is committed to providing guests with Unlimited-Luxury. At Akumal, this means everything unlimited food and drinks, 24-hour room service, and non-motorized water sports. There are 3 different pools and 2 hot tubs on the property and plenty of daytime activities on the beach. Everything from beach volleyball to kayaking. Secrets Akumal also has complimentary bike and kayak tours as well as private snorkeling with the sea turtles tour (this tour does come at an additional cost).

Evenings at Secrets Akumal are just as fun. Guests can enjoy live musical performances and cocktail parties and they have different theme nights and beach parties.

Breathless Cancun Soul- Best for Bachelor(ette) Parties

Breathless Cancun Soul is the best resort in the Riviera Maya for adults celebrating a bachelorette party

Breathless Cancun Soul is an adults-only all inclusive resort with a very lively and upbeat vibe, making it the perfect place for a bachelor(ette) party. There are over 400 suites, each with a private balcony and views of the lagoon or ocean. The resort is closely located to the best nightclubs in Cancun, like Coco Bongo. It’s also just a short drive from the airport, making it super convenient to get the party started ASAP!

Guests don’t have to take the party off the resort though. Breathless Cancun Soul has plenty of high-energy activities, like DJ pool parties, Karaoke Nights, a Champagne Party and even a White Beach Party. There are three pool areas, beach volleyball, tequila tastings, and dance classes. It’s definitely a resort that likes to party!

Just because the resort is known for its party vibe, doesn’t mean that they skimp on the quality of food. There are 10 chic dining venues including 5 a la carte restaurants, a buffet restaurant, poolside grills and 24-hour room service. There are no wristbands and no reservations, but plenty of fun and good food and drink!

Atelier Playa Mujeres- Best for Small Groups

Atelier is one of the best resorts in riviera maya for a small group of adults celebrating a birthday

Atelier Playa Mujeres has quickly become one of the most popular adult-only all-inclusive resorts in the Riviera Maya. It is located within the gated community of Playa Mujeres and sits on one of the loveliest beaches.

There are almost 600 suites, some of which feature private plunge pools. Upgrading to the Inspira room category is worth it in my opinion. Inspira guests are treated to personalized butler service, an upgraded in-room bar cart, access to a private beach area, and a private terrace with stunning infinity pools.

It’s a great resort for people who enjoy fabulous food. Atelier has 13 award-winning restaurants with cuisines ranging from upscale Mexican to authentic Mediterranean and a fantastic steak house, Los Abrazos. They have dining options for everyone, even plenty of vegetarian/vegan-friendly options. Pro tip- make your dining reservations when you arrive. There are 12 different bars on the property, including swim-up bars. They all have a unique vibe, serve top-shelf liquor, and also make incredible craft cocktails (and mocktails).

Royal Hideaway Playacar- Best for R&R

Royal Hideaway Playcar is a lovely resort in Playa del Carmen that offers a luxurious adults-only experience. It is a smaller property. With only 201 guest rooms, it provides a much more relaxed and laid-back vibe than some of the other resorts previously mentioned.

The resort boasts many amenities including 6 swimming pools, a full-service spa, a fitness centre, and two tennis courts. It is also closely located in Playa del Carmen’s popular shopping center, 5th Avenue. Guests can easily bike or walk to shop and explore the area.

Unico 2087- Best for Girlfriend Getaways

Unico 2087 is the perfect place for an adults vacation in the Riviera Maya

Unico 2087 is a very popular adult-only resort in the Riviera Maya. 90% of the rooms have ocean views. The only rooms that don’t are on the lower level. Pro-tip: when booking ask for a room on the 3rd or 4th floors, to ensure a view of the ocean.

There are lots of “extras” included at Unico, that make it unique to other resorts. For example, every room category comes with a Local Host who can assist you with making reservations for dinner, packing and unpacking, laundry services and so much more. At other resorts, butler service of this caliber is for select room categories only.

The resort has a stunning boho-chic vibe. But it’s not just all about looks, the food and drinks are also phenomenal. There are five different restaurants all featuring locally sourced ingredients. Mi Carisa is the Italian restaurant. It focuses on flavors of the Mediterranean and is one of the most popular at the resort.

Unico offers some unique experiences which I think sets them apart from other adult-only resorts. Some of the activities include mixology classes, salsa dancing lessons, and even cooking classes. They also have a wine and art class in the early evenings which would make a fun group activity with the girls. Guests get to sip wine while they create a piece of art, with the instruction and guidance of a local artist.

Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun- Best for Large Group Trips

Secrets Maroma is the perfect beach resort in the riviera maya for an adults only vacation

Secrets Maroma is one of the most consistently amazing resorts in the Mexican Caribbean. The resort has earned the prestigious AAA Five Diamond recognition for good reason. Everything is top notch. From the gorgeous beach, the immaculate grounds, and the incredible service, it will impress every member of your group.

There are over 400 deluxe guest rooms, including swim-up suites. Every guest room features private balconies, 24-hour room service, 24-hour concierge service and a large soaking tub. Even though the standard amenities are impressive, I do recommend upgrading to the Preferred Club category. An upgrade to the preferred club includes private check-in and check-out, upgraded room amenities, a personal concierge, and access to the Preferred Club lounge and private beach area.

Secrets Maroma has two expansive pools including an infinity pool with spectacular views. There is pool and beach side waiter service, so you never have to leave your lounge chair. During the day guests can enjoy snorkeling, archery, sunrise kayak tours, taco making classes and more. The entertainment at Maroma extends into the evening with live music, concert projections under the stars, and various theme nights and beach parties. It’s a great resort for active groups and meeting new people.

Impression Moxché by Secrets- Best for Luxury Loving Adults

Impression Moxché is the most luxurious resort in Riviera Maya for adults

Impression Moxché is located right next to Secrets Moxché. Guests at Impression can freely use any of the amenities at the Secrets property. Meaning they have access to 14 restaurants, 9 bars, 10 pools and 3 man-made cenotes. Impression’s guests receive a level of service they call Endless Privileges, where they ensure every need is exceeded. Some of the Endless Privileges include, a personal butler is assigned to each room, there is no check-in or out time, laundry service is complimentary, and rooms feature only the most luxurious amenities.

Guest suites at Impression are all extremely large. Even the entry level room is nearly 1000 square feet. The décor is extremely chic, incorporating rustic and modern elements. I do highly recommend bringing a travel mirror with a light. Even though they are lovely, the bathrooms are very dark.

Impression Moxché has a roof top pool area with complimentary Bali beds and a special poolside menu from the rooftop restaurant Cielo. There is often live music playing and the vibe is relaxing. If guests prefer a livelier vibe, they can walk down to the infinity pool on the Secrets Moxché side. The swim up bar is often full of people having a great time.

Full disclosure, while the property is gorgeous and all the pool areas are stunning, the beach itself is underwhelming. Thankfully there are plenty of beach lounge chairs on both the Impression and Secrets sides and the beachside service is quick and includes a large menu of food options. But it is worth mentioning, for people who like to get in the ocean and swim, this is not the best resort. However, if that’s not important, than Impression Moxché is hands down the resort for people seeking the most luxurious adult-only experience.

What to Expect at an Adults-Only All-Inclusive Resort

Set your expectations even at the best resorts in riviera maya for an adults only vacation

One of the most important tips I can give is to adjust your expectations. Of course, your vacation should be amazing and everything you had hoped. But there are some things to be mindful of and knowing them will help ensure you do have the trip of your dreams.

Food

The food at all inclusive resorts has certainly improved dramatically in recent years. But keep in mind, you are at a resort that is catering to hundreds, if not thousands of guests, at a time. The quality of food might not be what you’d receive at a 5-star restaurant at home.

Also, chances are you will be indulging in food and beverages that you don’t typically enjoy at home. There is also unlimited access, be careful not to go overboard. Try to drink plenty of water and include some food with nutritional value at each meal. Often upset stomachs occur because we’ve overindulged.

Free Massage

No. Just say no. It is not free. It will cost you HOURS of your precious vacation time, sitting through a timeshare presentation to earn that free massage. It’s not worth it. If you want a massage, pay for one. They will be more expensive than a spa at home, but it includes a full hydrotherapy circuit, and the experience is worth it.

Sargassum

Sargassum has become more and more of an issue in the Riviera Maya. Many resorts put up barriers in an effort to prevent it from encroaching on the beach, but these barriers can only do so much, and Mother Nature has a mind of her own. The resort staff will do the best they can to clean the beaches, but again there is only so much that can be done. Please remember this upon arrival and do your best to not be disappointed if the beach doesn’t look like the images online.

Best Resorts in Riviera Maya for Adults- Final Thoughts

I have never stayed in a huge resort like this, so I would have no idea what to expect – but it looks sooo relaxing from your photos. I am guessing normally there are far more guests – the images make them all seem very empty!

p.s. Oooh I would not have know about the massage and I had never heard of sargassum. Thanks for those tips!
