Are you heading to Cabo San Lucas in April? Check out this post for everything you should know from what to do and where to stay.

The Best Tips for Cabo San Lucas in April

Cabo San Lucas is one of the most popular destinations along the Mexican Riviera. It’s not hard to see why, from the breathtaking beaches and abundance of water activities to the stunning resorts and fabulous cuisine. The weather is also fabulous (almost) year-round. It is the perfect place for a romantic getaway, college spring break or a family vacation.

April is a great month to visit Cabo too, because it’s at the tail end of high season. The spring breakers are packing up, the weather is warm and there’s a chance you can spot humpback whales. As a travel advisor, who has taken (and planned) many trips to Cabo, I’ve found that April is my favorite time to visit.

In this post I’ll share my top travel tips for Cabo, where to stay, what the weather is like, and some of the awesome activities to do. Keep reading for everything you need to know about traveling to Cabo San Lucas in April and every other part of the year.

Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo and Los Cabos

San Jose del Cabo in April

Before I jump into travel tips for Cabo, it’s important to know the difference between Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, and Los Cabos. Los Cabos is the region that encompasses the two towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are two very different experiences. Cabo San Lucas is a resort destination offering plenty of nightlife, activities, and an energetic and lively atmosphere. San Jose del Cabo is known for its historic town square, locally owned art galleries, and eclectic boutiques. It is more laidback than Cabo San Lucas.

Cabo San Lucas Weather: A Breakdown by Season

April is a good time at the Marina in Cabo San Lucas

As I mentioned previously, Cabo San Lucas is a desirable destination any time of the year. When you visit is really just a personal decision based on the activities you want to experience and your weather preference. Keep reading for a closer look at what you can expect each season.

Peak Season

The peak season for travel to Cabo San Lucas is December through March. Even in the winter months, the weather is beautiful. Daytime temperatures can reach up to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep in mind that the water temperature drops during this time, and some find it too cold for swimming. Because of the holidays and spring break, many consider these the best months to visit. This also means more crowds and higher prices.

Low Season

The months of July through October are considered low season. It is also the rainy season and Pacific hurricane season. The daily high temperatures and high humidity are another reason it’s slower during this time of year. However, it’s a great time to visit if you’d like to avoid the wintertime crowds. Prices are also a bit more reasonable.

Shoulder Season

The season between peak and low season is what we refer to as the shoulder season. April through June are the months that fall into the shoulder season. I find this the best time of year to go to Cabo. First, you will avoid the spring break crowd. Second, you’ll get great weather. And third, fantastic prices.

If you are looking to avoid large crowds, make sure to double-check the calendar for Semana Santa. This is the week before Easter, and if it falls in the month of April, you can expect it to be crowded as many locals will be taking time to vacation.

Outdoor Activities in Cabo San Lucas

Whale Watching in Cabo San Lucas in April

There is so much to do in Cabo San Lucas. Each season brings different types of outdoor activities to enjoy. As a coastal destination, many of the activities take place in the water.

The Sea of Cortez is one of the best places in Cabo to enjoy water activities. From fishing to whale watching and snorkeling to diving, there’s something for everyone! Keep reading to learn more about some of the best experiences in Cabo.

What is the Best Time of Year for Whale Watching

I don’t think there is anything more majestic than a whale watching experience. Cabo San Lucas is one of the best places to witness the whale migration firsthand. Mid-December through April is the best time to see the whales. The different types of species you might see include whale sharks, gray whales and humpbacks.

Most of the whale tours depart from La Paz as it’s one of the best places to swim with them. Boat tours will also take you past the famous rock formation, Land’s End. Pro-tip: if you are prone to getting seasick, make sure to book a morning tour when the waters are calmer.

What is the Best Time of Year for Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

Cabo is a great place to snorkel and scuba dive. These water activities can be done throughout the year, but certain months are better depending on what your preferences are. For warm waters, the months between August and December are best. You will also see very clear waters during these months. If swimming with large marine animals, like orcas, manta rays, and whales, is on your bucket list then diving between December and May would be the best months. Just another reason why visiting Cabo San Lucas in April is ideal!

What is the Best Time for Fishing Tournaments

Peak fishing season, Cabo, begins in May and runs through early November. But October is when the major fishing tournaments occur. One of the most notable tournaments is Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament. It’s an unforgettable experience for fishing enthusiasts. For 5 days, thousands of people crowd the marina to party and watch the massive fish weigh in.

Though not peak fishing season, April is a great time to visit Cabo to fish. One reason is the great weather makes for an enjoyable day of fishing. You do not have to participate in a fishing tournament to experience deep sea fishing. There are plenty of charter boats with experienced captains. They will take you to the best places to fish. April is prime time for Striped Marlin and Swordfish.

The Best Cabo San Lucas Experiences

April is a good time for Cabo San Lucas

As I mentioned, there are plenty of water activities to experience in Cabo San Lucas. Cabo also has plenty of unique and off-the-beath-path experiences on land as well. Continue reading for some of my favorites.

Sierra de la Laguna

The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range and one of the least explored areas of Cabo. It’s awesome for day hikes and relaxing in the hot springs. April would be the perfect time, weather wise for this activity.

Farm-to-Table Dining

I love farm-to-table dining experiences, and love that there are some great options in the middle of the dessert. One of the best is at Flora Farms, Flora’s Field Kitchen. The use farm fresh ingredients and meat sourced from their nearby ranch to create delicious meals. I recommend making reservations for dinner, where you can sit under the twinkling lights and enjoy live music.

Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo

On Thursday evenings in the winter and spring, head into San José del Cabo for an art walk. Many of the art galleries will stay open until 9:00 pm. Some of them have meet and greets with the artists or have wine tastings. The streets are closed to cars during this time, so people can safely walk the streets as the live music plays.

Where to Stay in Cabo San Lucas

Sunset over the hotel zone in Cabo San Lucas

As I previously mentioned, April is a great time to visit Cabo San Lucas, because it falls just outside of high season. This means the prices will be better. The crowds will also be smaller, so you should have plenty of choices of fabulous resorts. Read on for some of my favorite resorts in Cabo San Lucas
