The Best Cancun Excursion for Couples
One of the best parts of vacationing with your significant other is making unforgettable memories together. Some of the best memories are made by having fun and enjoying a unique experience or two. Cancun is a great place for couples to experience beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and the best excursions.
Whether your trip to Mexico is for your honeymoon, anniversary trip, or a romantic getaway you and your significant other will have an unforgettable experience. Keep reading for 11 of the best excursions for couples to experience in the Cancun area.

1. Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres is a small island not too far from Cancun. The ferry ride is about a half hours away. It’s the perfect place to visit for a quick day trip, especially if you’re staying in Playa Mujeres or the hotel-zone of Cancun.
Its major attraction is Playa Norte, which is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Cancun area. Playa Norte has white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and plenty of beach bars with cold drinks and live music.
I recommend renting a golf cart and exploring the island on your own. There is a lot to see, like Tortuga Granja which is a sanctuary for sea turtles on Sac Bajo. If you and your partner are into snorkeling, then you have to check out MUSA which is an underwater museum. It’s such a unique snorkeling experience.
Of course, a day of romance must include watching the sunset. Punta Sur gives you the perfect backdrop for a romantic sunset.
2. Xenses by Xcaret
Get in touch with your senses by going on a date at Xenses by Xcaret Park. This immersive experience is a whimsical journey designed to spark laughter, play, connection, and a sense of wonder.
You and your sweetie will walk through optical illusions, navigate your way through unexpected landscapes, and test your bravery as you fly through the park.
There is a ‘Path of Doing,’ where you will participate in different activities like ziplining, water slides, and rivers to float down. Then there is the ‘Path of Feeling,’ where you will walk through a pitch-black sense-atorium, which is essentially a maze. The maze will take you through different ecosystems, and you will “feel” your way through. The idea is for you to use your senses, other than sight, to find your way.
One of the best parts is the town. The town is unreal, and there is no way to accurately describe it. The best thing to do is to experience it first-hand.
The experience at Xenses is unlike anything else. Take this day as a chance to reconnect in a world that is both surreal and enchanting.
Xenses Park is super easy to get to if you’re staying in the Playa del Carmen area, but also not too far from other parts of the Riviera Maya and Cancun. This park does not have a restaurant so I would consider it more of a half-day experience.
3. Chichén Itza
Chichén Itza is a Mayan archaeological site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the top tourist attractions in the Yucatan Peninsula. For couples who love history, this excursion can’t be missed.
The Mayans were skilled astronomers, and Chichen Itza’s structures align with celestial events with astonishing precision. During the spring and fall equinoxes, the shadow cast by the steps of El Castillo creates the illusion of a serpent descending the pyramid. If you can coordinate your trip to align with this event, I would highly recommend this experience.
This excursion is a full-day experience. Chichen Itza is about 3 hours from downtown Cancun and 2 hours from Playa del Carmen. My recommendation is to book a guided tour in advance and arrive early to beat the heat and crowds.
4. Selvatica Adventure Park
For thrill-seeking couples, a day at Selvatica Adventure Park is a must. It’s home to the highest zip line in Cancun and is sure to get your heart pumping.
There are 10 different zip lines, cenotes, ATVs and more. The park offers many different packages, including one, called ‘Give Me All’ where you can experience everything.
You can also purchase different combos, like the Mud and Mexology combo. This combo includes ATVs, cenotes and a mixology class where you learn to make drinks and snacks.
5. Muyil Ruins and Lazy River
Another great option for couples who love history is a tour of the Muyil Ruins. This tour is especially great if you’d prefer to combine an archeological experience with a relaxing water activity.
The ancient ruins are on a smaller scale than those at Chichen Itza. Visiting Muyil will also provide a more intimate experience, as it’s not as crowded as the Tulum ruins. Another bonus is that they are in a more shaded area, and don’t get as hot.
After touring the ancient Mayan ruins, you will take a walk through the jungle to the lagoon. There you will board a small fishing boat and be taken to a second lagoon. In the second lagoon, you will jump off the boat, put on your life jacket, and be carried away by the natural currents. You’ll float down crystal-clear waters while enjoying the tranquility of the natural surroundings.
I love this excursion because it’s off the beaten path. It’s a great way for you and your partner to connect, relax, and experience Cancun in a totally different way.
6. Swimming with the Whale Sharks
Swimming with the Whale Sharks is an awesome excursion for couples staying in Cancun or the Playa/Costa Mujeres areas. Even though they are the biggest fish in the sea they do not pose a threat to humans, so don’t let that worry stop you from this awesome snorkeling experience.
Whale Sharks migrate between the middle of May to mid-September. The best months for this experience are July and August, as this is when you will have the best chance of seeing them.
The boat ride can be very rough. Because of this, my recommendation is to limit alcohol the night before. You should also start taking Dramamine the night before. It is 100% worth it though to see these majestic creatures.
7. Kantun Chi Cenote Park
Nature lovers will appreciate spending the day in a cenote park, like Kantun Chi. Cenotes are natural sinkholes formed by collapsed cave systems, revealing crystal-clear pools of fresh water. Thanks to Instagram, Visiting the cenotes has become one of the top things for visitors to do in the Riviera Maya area. Kantun Chi is a pristine natural park that will give you a unique and immersive experience.
There are 5 cenotes to explore and 3 different types- open, semi-open, and cavernous. There are different tour options available. Only the cave cenote requires a guide. If you wanted to explore the others on your own, you could. Unless you get claustrophobic easily, I highly recommend swimming through the underground river, as it is truly magical.
If you are looking for an experience that isn’t going to be a full-day tour, Kantun Chi is one to consider. It is closely located to resorts in the Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Akumal areas.
8. Punta Laguna Monkey Reserve
Nature-loving couples will love visiting the Punta Laguna Monkey Reserve. This excursion is totally off the beaten path. It’s run by the Mayan locals and helps support 30 families in the area.
You will be guided through the reserve and have the opportunity to see both howler and spider monkeys. The excursion includes canoeing across the lagoon, zip-lining into a cenote, and a Maya purification ceremony.
9. Couple’s Photoshoot
Personally, I am not one for souvenirs that can be purchased at gift shops, etc. I prefer to have really beautiful photos that I can have framed and displayed at home. One unique way to capture your vacation memories is to hire a photographer for a professional photoshoot, especially if you’re celebrating your honeymoon or special anniversary.
Many of the all-inclusive hotels will have onsite photographers that you can book directly. The last trip I took to Cancun, I hired a photographer to take some photos around the resort. It is worth mentioning, that if you are interested in having the photos done at your resort, you will be required to use the resort’s preferred photographer or pay a fee to bring in your own.
Another option is to have a photographer take photos off the resort property. You could hire a local photographer to take photos of you and your S.O. on an excursion or exploring Cancun.
So often our photos are selfies, or only include half the party. By hiring a professional photographer, you both can be in the photos. This is such a great way to capture unforgettable memories.
10. El Pueblito Cooking Class
For foodie couples, consider taking a cooking class. You’ll get to make (and eat) delicious food, enjoy an open bar, and perhaps even pick up a new skill. One of my favorite cooking classes is in the Mayakoba complex at El Pueblito.
The class takes place in an industrial kitchen. There are different menus that you get to pick from, and they do have vegetarian and vegan options. One of the best parts is that you get to focus on cooking the dishes because they have people working to clean up. Oh, and you get to take home your leftovers!
One of the most romantic activities a couple can experience is a sunset cruise aboard a luxury catamaran. Cancun is the perfect place for this excursion.
You could book either private or group cruises. While a private sunset
No matter how you choose to experience the excursion, a sunset
Activities for Couples at Your All-Inclusive Resort
Above I shared 11 of the best Cancun excursions for couples. These activities are all great for creating memories outside of your resort. There are so many fun and romantic things that you can do without leaving your all-inclusive resort. Keep reading for more fun things you and your partner can experience on your Cancun vacation.
1. Couples Massage
Many resorts, especially the higher-end resorts, have spas onsite. If the resort you’re staying at has a spa, consider booking a massage for the two of you to enjoy together.
2. Romantic Dinner Experience
If you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort, your dinners at the resort restaurants will be included in your package. However, consider surprising your sweetie with a romantic dinner for just the two of you on the beach. This is an additional cost, but totally worth it, especially if you’re celebrating a special occasion.
3. Romantic Packages
Resorts will typically offer upgraded packages to elevate the romantic experience. These packages are typically for proposals, honeymooners, and couples celebrating anniversaries. The packages might include upgraded bath amenities, decorated suites, romantic dinners on the beach, spa services, etc. Check to see if your resort offers something like this when you book your room.
4. Sunrise Walk
A romantic activity that won’t add any extra cost would be getting up early for a sunrise walk on the beach. Grab a couple of coffees from the café, and enjoy the sunrise as you take a walk, hand-in-hand, down the beach. There is something so peaceful and romantic about experiencing the sunrise with your special person.
5. Breakfast in Bed
Order room service breakfast and enjoy a leisurely morning indulging in your favorite breakfast foods in bed. Many resorts include room service as a part of the all-inclusive package. If offered, consider adding champagne or mimosas for the additional fee.
6. Room Décor
Surprise your sweetie with room décor. This can be done while you are at dinner, or out on one of the excursions. There are plenty of options to choose from including balloons, rose petals, floral arrangements, and even luxurious bath options.
