Are you heading to Italy and wanting to truly experience the Amalfi Coast? This post has all the best day trips from Positano Italy so you can live la dolce vita!

Discover the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most popular destinations in southern Italy, and it’s not hard to see why. With its breathtaking views, beautiful beaches, colorful buildings, and unbelievably good food it’s easy to understand why people from all over the world come here.

Towns in Amalfi

Amalfi is made up of 13 towns and villages, a few of the most popular are

  • Amalfi: is known for its history, stunning scenery, and fresh seafood.
  • Positano: known for the beautiful beaches, boutiques, and all the stairs.
  • Ravello: known for its fantastic coastal views.

How to Get to the Amalfi Coast

Getting to Amalfi is not difficult, but I do not recommend tourists drive themselves. The roads are incredibly narrow and winding. Also, the locals zip around at a speed, that would make anyone unfamiliar with the drive, uneasy.

Having someone else drive you is the best and safest option. A public bus can be taken from Naples, Sorrento and Salerno. But if your budget allows, hiring a private driver, is the best way to get there. It’s the easiest way and the most stress-free option. When I travel, I always like to make sure it’s as stress-free as possible!

When to Visit the Amalfi Coast

best way to see amalfi is day trips from positano

As I previously mentioned, the Amalfi Coast is a very popular tourist destination, which means it gets very crowded. The peak tourism season is in the summer months when the weather is warm and the sun shines bright for nearly 14 hours. If getting caught in the masses doesn’t appeal to you, consider traveling to Amalfi during the “shoulder season.” The shoulder season is the months surrounding the peak tourist times- so April-May and September-October. The crowds will be slightly smaller and the prices slightly cheaper. I think this is the best time to experience it.

Day Trips from Positano Italy

Positano is an ideal place to stay when visiting the Amalfi Coast. It’s centrally located making it easy to get to other parts of the Amalfi Coast. While there is a lot to do in the town of Positano itself, make sure to allow time to see other parts of Amalfi. To give you some ideas and to help round out your itinerary, I’ve compiled a list of some fun day trips from Positano Italy, keep reading for 13 of my favorites.

Private Tours from Positano Italy- Private Tours

stunning views in the picturesque town of positano

One of the most luxurious ways to see the Amalfi Coast is via a private tour. A private tour is so great because it’s set at your own pace and can be customized to your preferences.

Private Boat Tour

Hiring a private boat charter to take you along the Amalfi Coast is the perfect way to soak up the Italian sun and explore the Mediterranean Sea. You will be able to stop as often as you like to swim in the blue waters or head ashore to check out the charming villages.

The cost of a private boat tour usually includes fuel, taxes, and port fees as well as snacks and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages aboard the boat.

Make sure to check out Marmorata in Ravello. It is so lush and green and there is a small lagoon with a little waterfall. It’s the most picturesque place for a swim.

Private Tour by Car

Another great way to take a private day tour and explore the Amalfi Coast is by car. This gives you a unique and unforgettable experience to take in the beautiful countryside and the stunning views as you ride along the coastal roads.

Many different private tours will show you the Amalfi Coast by private car. A great option for couples who are in Amalfi as a part of their honeymoon or other romantic getaway would be to take a tour via a Fiat 500. Some of the Fiat tours also include stops along the way to take professional photos.

For larger groups or families, there are private tours in luxury sedans. These tours will take you to the small towns along Amalfi and be customized to your preference. Throughout the tour, your guide will explain the history, offer restaurant recommendations, and give you a local’s insight into each place you visit.

Private Tour to Naples

If Naples is not part of your itinerary on its own, consider adding it as a day trip from Positano Italy. To make the most of your time, a private tour to Naples would be a great idea.

Sites to see would be the Royal Palace of Naples, Naples Underground, Saint Gennaro Church, and Museo di Capodimonte. Make sure to indulge in authentic Neapolitan pizza while you are there!

Food and Wine Day Trips from Positano

wine tasting is a great day trip from Positano

When I think of Italy, I immediately think of food and wine. To me, one of the best ways to experience a new place and to immerse myself in the culture is through its food. So it only makes sense to include plenty of day trips from Postiano Italy that are focused on the food and wine.

Wine Tasting

Italy is known for world-class wine and as such, there are plenty of different tours to take that will involve wine tastings. One of the best wine tours involves a drive to Tramonti, which is a fantastic wine region. Here you will visit a local winery and learn about the vineyards and the wine-making process from a certified sommelier. After you tour the cellar, you will get to sample 3 different types of wine.

Cooking Class

As much as Italy is known for wine, it is equally (if not more so) known for its amazing food. One of the best things to do in Italy is to take a cooking class. And there are countless options. I think these are best done as a small group tour, where you get to cook in the host’s home. I love this tour, where you will make various starters that include fresh produce and olive oils from the region, as well as gnocchi and of course tiramisu.

Limoncello Distillery

Lemons are a large part of the culture of the Amalfi region. The Amalfi lemons are larger and sweeter than the varieties you find at your local supermarket. Limoncello is an Italian liqueur made from the zest of the Amalfi lemons. Traditionally it is served chilled as an after-dinner digestive. A fun way to learn more about the liqueur would be to take a day trip from Positano Italy to the town of Sorrento where it is produced.

Truffle Hunting

Foodies will appreciate truffle hunting in the Campania region. This day trip from Positano includes round-trip transportation from your hotel, breakfast, and a private tour through the mountain forest in Campania. You will spend the day truffle hunting with a professional and their dogs followed by a truffle and cheese tasting. To make this experience even more luxurious, you will finish with a 3-course lunch with wine.

Coastal Day Trips from Positano Italy

beautiful beaches along the coast of Positano

There are so many things to see and experience along the coast. The Amalfi Coast has so much to offer for lovers of the sun, sand, and sea, keep reading for a few must-do activities.

Island of Capri

A trip to the Amalfi Coast would not be complete without a Capri day trip. Famous for designer boutiques, mega yachts, and luxury hotels, the beautiful island is Italy’s luxury island. It is also home to many museums, monuments, and churches. Its rich history is another reason it draws so many visitors.

Blue Star Positano is one of the best tour operators, for private tours of Capri Island. The full-day experience will include a boat ride with visits to the Faraglioni Rocks and the famous Blue Grotto. There will be many stops along the way to swim and snorkel. It is recommended to stop at the main port, Marina Grande, for lunch before making a slow return to Positano.

Sunset Cruise

Though technically not a day trip, a romantic and unforgettable experience to have in Positano would be to take a sunset cruise. Sip Italian Prosecco aboard a wooden boat, while enjoying the most beautiful sunsets with the picturesque town of Positano as the backdrop.

Beach Club

Earlier in the post, I mentioned Positano was known for its beautiful beaches, and spending a day enjoying them should be at the top of any Amalfi Coast itinerary. There are several beach clubs to choose from. One of the most well-known is Arienzo Beach Club. Each reservation comes with lounge chairs, an umbrella, a bottle of champagne, towels, and food from their restaurant. It is the perfect way to spend hours of free time and really soak in la dolce vita!

Best Positano Day Trips for History

mount vesuvius and pompeii are perfect day trips from positano italy

The Amalfi Coast is among the unesco world heritage sites, and therefore it is a no-brainer to include day trips that dive deep into the history of the region.

Pompeii is considered to be one of the greatest archeological discoveries to date. The city was frozen in time by volcanic ash and provides some of the best insight into human history. The best way to experience Pompeii is with a guided tour led by an archeologist. A local guide will give you a closer look into what life was like in Pompeii before the volcano erupted. You will also get to see sites like the Forum, thermal baths and basilica. Make sure to get a pass with a skip the line ticket, as it will get quite crowded.

Mount Vesuvius

While you are exploring Pompeii, consider adding a tour of Vesuvius. It’s one of the most famous volcanoes in the world and the one responsible for wiping out Pompeii and Herculaneum. Like touring Pompeii, it’s best to take a guided tour. You will get so much more out of it with a professional guide.

Path of the Gods

For people who like to be active, a hiking tour of the Path of Gods is one of the coolest ways to experience the Amalfi Coast. You will walk along scenic trails overlooking the most beautiful coastline. A private guide will teach you about the area throughout the tour, and you will have time to stop for local delicacies at the mid-way point.

As this is often called one of the best road trip destinations in the world, I hope to explore it one day by car. Your remark on safety does concern me a bit. I can imagine the roads are winding (just like we have on the Croatian coast), but I cannot imagine how narrow or truly stressful they could be hm :/
