Travel Essentials for All Ages
People of all ages travel, and travel for various reasons. Whether the trip is across the state to visit family, flying to different countries as a digital nomad, or cruising around the world, there are certain items that you will need to make the most of your trip. Below is a list of practical travel gifts, that any frequent traveler would be excited to receive.
As a frequent flyer myself, I know the difference between a great piece of luggage and luggage that makes the travel experience painful. In the past, I have struggled with luggage that would break after a couple of trips, rollers that function worse than a wonky grocery cart, or tip over when they are too full (and I can fill a bag).
Then I tried this two-piece set from Samsonite, and I’m in love. It’s ultra-light, which means I can pack more (yay), has double spinner wheels that roll super smooth, and is overall great quality. The set comes with a 21-inch carry-on and a 28-inch checked bag. You can also purchase a 24-inch medium piece separately.
2. Reusable Water Bottle
Traveling can be dehydrating, especially if you’re flying. Reusable water bottles are the perfect way to combat the dehydration that comes with travel. Many airports today have hydration stations where travelers can easily refill their water bottles. This is so great it’s a huge money saver and cuts back on plastic waste since you no longer have to purchase bottled water from one of the airport shops.
I love this 24 oz Hydro Flask with the flex straw. It is the perfect size, keeps my water cold for hours, and doesn’t leak. It comes in several different colors too. The Hydro Flask is a little pricey, but if you consider how much money you’re saving by not buying bottled water, you’re actually saving money.
3. Compression Packing Cubes
I am a big fan of packing cubes and have been for some time now, but the compression packing cubes are on another level. They are so good. First, they keep everything organized. Second, they create even more space than the regular ones. When I travel, I like to use one for each type of clothing I am packing- one cube will be for workout wear, another for casual outfits, a third for dressy outfits, and a fourth for pajamas and undergarments.
The compression packing cubes by Bagail are fantastic. They are at a fantastic price point and come in plenty of colors and different set sizes (4, 5, or 6 pieces). Having different colors is great for family travelers, each family member can have their own color.
4. Passport Holders
Another great gift idea is a passport holder. It’s the perfect gift for the person on your list who does a lot of international travel. There are many different options and price points and it’s a very practical gift. To be honest, before I started working in the travel industry, I didn’t understand why anyone would spend money on this. Now I get it.
A passport cover is extra protection for that all-important document. It helps protect against normal wear and tear and any liquids spilling on them. I also like how a brightly colored one can help me easily and quickly identify it in my purse. And lastly, they add a little personality.
5. Luggage Tags
Luggage tags are definitely a must-have travel item for a few reasons. First and foremost, they provide airlines with all of the information needed in case your bag is lost. Second, they will help you identify your luggage in a sea of black suitcases on the luggage carousel.
Make sure to prioritize durability. You will want to gift a luggage tag that won’t come off easily. I like this one from Travelambo. It’s faux leather, comes in 40 different colors and patterns, and has a privacy flap. It’s also really affordable. If you’re looking at holiday gifts, this would be a fabulous stocking stuffer.
6. SIM Card
If the traveler on your gift list frequently travels to different countries, getting them an international SIM card would be a great gift.
An international SIM Card gives the traveler the ability to stay connected via texting, phone calls, and the internet without incurring roaming charges. This will save a lot of money on the cell phone bill.
7. World Map
Gifting a map of the world is a unique gift idea and one that your travel-loving friend will surely appreciate. This gift is more sentimental than the previous ideas. There are so many different options- a 3-D Map, scratch-off, or magnetic are just a few great ideas. My favorite is this canvas push-pin world map from Holy Cow Canvas.
It’s a great price point and it can be personalized with names and a favorite travel quote.
8. Gift Cards
Gift cards make awesome gifts, especially for someone who loves to travel. Just about every company has gift card options, and if they don’t, a VISA gift card will also be super useful. Below is a short list of gift cards that a person who travels often will appreciate:
- Southwest Airlines
- American Airlines
- MaidPro- Because nobody likes to come home from a trip to a messy house
9. Tech Organizer
We all have so many electronic devices, and each device has a specific charging cord. Those who travel often understand the struggle when they find all the cords tangled up into one giant mess. A tech organizer helps keep everything nice and tidy and would be a great gift for any traveling techie. They make it so much easier to access everything and are great space savers too.
This option from Bagsmart, is a great option. It’s lightweight, water resistant, and has plenty of elastic straps and pockets for holding everything.
10. White Noise Machine
It can be hard to sleep in a new place- different pillows, an uncomfortable mattress, maybe even because you’re in a completely different time zone. White noise machines are said to aid in creating an ideal sleep environment. Gifting one of these white noise machines to the travel lover on your list might just be one of the best gifts they’ll receive, especially if they have difficulty sleeping in new places.
11. Backpack Beach Chair
These beach chairs from Tommy Bahama are perfect for the beach lover. They are lightweight and easy to carry. There is a cooler pouch and storage space that can be used for a beach towel and a book. The adjustable back provides all-day comfort, as it reclines to 4 different positions, including laying flat.
12. UV Toothbrush Sanitizer
The world is a germy place. Gift your travel lover something that will help keep them healthy during their travels and give them a UV toothbrush sanitizer. The world is a germy place and the snap-on plastic toothbrush covers don’t get the job done in keeping a toothbrush germ-free.
This one by Bril, will keep the germs at bay and acts as a travel toothbrush cover. I have always been a germaphobe and can honestly say I feel much more relaxed since I’ve gotten this.
13. Towel Clips
I used to struggle with keeping my towel situated on the beach chair. It would slip down when I was sitting on it or blow off in the wind. While it was probably good for me to chase it down the beach a few times a day, it was a bit annoying. And who wants to be annoyed at the beach? No one. I remember seeing a couple using them at a resort and immediately jumped on Amazon.
Problems solved! There are TONS of different fun options to choose from. Everything from a simple design to options with a lot of personality. It could also be a great gift for everyone traveling on a group trip, like a destination wedding or a bachelorette party.
14. Neck Fan
A portable neck fan is a perfect gift for people traveling to a warm destination where they will be doing a lot of walking and have limited access to air conditioning. Last year, I was in Rome in August, and it was sweltering. I would have loved to have had one of these neck fans then!
The neck fan by JISULIFE is one of the highest-rated options on the market. It’s only 9 ounces and you totally forget you’re wearing it after half an hour. The rechargeable battery lasts for up to 16 hours when used on the lowest setting. It’s a fantastic price point too.
Travel Gifts for Under $50
Finding affordable and thoughtful gifts can seem like a daunting task. But don’t worry, I have done the leg work. In my research, I found many unique gifts that can be purchased for under $50. From converters to travel mugs, there is surely something on this list that your favorite traveler will enjoy.
One of the must-have items when traveling abroad is a converter and adapter combo. While it might not be the most exciting gift, it is a very practical gift. They can both be purchased separately because they have different functions. A travel adapter is what is needed in many other countries to adapt the outlets for US electronics. A converter converts the voltage to match that of the appliance.
I highly recommend getting the Bestek Travel Adapter and 220V to 110V Voltage Converter. It is a bit bulky, but only because it has space for 7 different electronic devices. This is the perfect gift for traveling families or if your traveler is also a techie.
A journal would be a great gift for someone about to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience. It’s a great place for them to jot down their memories and document their trip. A travel blogger would especially appreciate this as a gift.
I like the 5 Minute Journal because it only takes 5 minutes to write about my experiences. So much happens on our vacations, and it’s nice to have the journal to look back on and truly appreciate all that happened.
17. Compression Socks
When I fly my legs and feet swell, and not just a little, but to the point they are unrecognizable. I started wearing compression socks to help combat this problem, and it’s reduced the swelling significantly. They are especially helpful on long-haul flights when sitting for long periods of time. Another benefit, and probably the most important, is that they reduce the risk of blood clots.
18. Portable Charger
Keeping the phone charged is so important when traveling in an unfamiliar place. We use our phones for everything- from maps to provide us with directions or looking up the best restaurants nearby and communicating with loved ones. Gift your frequent flier a portable charger to ensure they always have a full charge.
The portable charger by Anker is one of the best available. Its super slim design makes it easy to tuck into the pocket of a carry-on. It also can charge devices multiple times before needing to be charged.
19. Hand Cream
As I mentioned before, traveling can be dehydrating. Flying, especially, will wreak havoc on the skin. I always fly with a good hand cream in my carry-on. A good hand cream will be appreciated by any traveler, and I highly recommend that it make the gift list. I am obsessed with the hand cream by L’Occitane. It instantly helps my hands feel softer and has a soft scent that is not overpowering.
20. Lip Mask
Along with the hand cream, a good lip mask is one of my travel necessities. A good lip mask will keep the lips softer and more hydrated much longer than lip balm. Because they are more expensive than a typical lip balm, I think they make a great gift. My favorite, which I have been using for years is by Tatcha.
21. Travel Pillow
It can be super hard to get comfortable enough to sleep when sitting upright, whether that’s on a plane, train, or automobile. Having a quality travel pillow will make this much easier. This travel pillow by Cabeau would make a fantastic gift for any travel lover.
It has adjustable straps that attach to any headrest which will prevent the pillow from slipping out of place. The adjustable chin rest provides additional comfort, and it is machine washable. It is a bit large, but it rolls up nicely.
22. Apple AirTag
It’s no secret that there have been unfortunate issues with flying recently. From delays to cancelations, and when that happens, luggage can go missing. As someone who always checks her bags, I feel much more confident knowing where my luggage is now that I have the Apple AirTags. I put one in each piece of luggage so I can always keep track of them. I highly recommend all travelers get these.
23. Portable Luggage Scale
One of my greatest fears, as an overpacker, is getting stuck at the airport with an overweight bag. If the jet setter on your list, is also prone to overpacking, they could use a portable luggage scale like this one from Amazon Basics. They are small enough to slip into the luggage and provide accurate weight measurements, ensuring no overweight fees are incurred.
24. AirFly Pro
If your favorite jetsetter uses Bluetooth headphones or earbuds when they fly, they will appreciate receiving the AirFly Pro. It pairs with most Bluetooth-enabled devices and plugs into the seatback entertainment screen allowing the traveler to enjoy the inflight entertainment on their own headphones.
25. Travel Pill/Vitamin Organizer
While not the most exciting item, a travel pill organizer is another very practical gift for a person who loves to travel. There is no need to carry around multiple bottles that only take up space or store them in Ziploc bags. This pill organizer comes in two different sizes and a few different colors.
One of the more unique gifts for a travel lover is a moonstone crystal. It’s known as the “traveler’s stone.” Many cultures believe it protects the traveler, especially if traveling at night or overseas. I always keep a moonstone with me, it was a gift years ago, and one I never travel without.
28. Noshinku Pocket Hand Sanitizer
Who says hand sanitizer has to come in a boring bottle and smell terrible? It doesn’t. Help keep your frequent flyer healthy and germ-free with these beautiful hand sanitizers from Noshinku. They would make a fantastic stocking stuffer if you’re shopping for a holiday gift.
29. Fellow Carter Everywhere Travel Mug
Any coffee-loving traveler will appreciate the Carter Everywhere Travel Mug by Fellow. It has a ceramic interior that keeps coffee tasting the way it should without that “old penny” taste that you get from a stainless interior. The 12 oz mug will keep your hot beverages hot for up to 12 hours and your cold drinks chilled for up to 24 hours.
30. Travel Laundry Bag
One of the least fun parts about traveling is all the laundry that needs to be done when you get home. Before investing in a smell-proof travel laundry bag, I would have to wash all the clothes I bought even if I hadn’t worn them. IYKYK. The mumi travel laundry bag keeps the dirty clothes separated from the clean ones, and it truly is smell-proof.
Travel Gifts for Safety
While the following gifts aren’t glamorous, they are extremely important because they are all about keeping your favorite traveler safe. It’s important to show how much you care, and any of these gifts will do just that. Keep reading for a list of travel-focused safety products that will make great gifts and help ensure safety.
31. Door Alarm
It can be a challenge to fall asleep in an unfamiliar place, like a hotel room in a different country. Help the globetrotter in your life sleep a little better by gifting them a door alarm. This alarm by Monsin acts as a door stop and an alarm. The rubber bearing will prevent the door from opening and the loud shrill will scare anyone away.
32. Carbon Monoxide Detector
A carbon monoxide leak can happen anywhere- in a vacation rental home or a 5-star luxury resort. It will go undetected, especially while sleeping. There have been too many new stories reporting the untimely death of travelers due to carbon monoxide poisoning, so now I always take the Kidde Carbon Monoxide Detector with me and set it up in my room as soon as I arrive.
33. She’s Birdie Personal Safety Alarm
I love solo travel. It is such a liberating experience and something that has been an exciting and important part of my life. I have never felt unsafe and try to always remain mindful of my surroundings. With that being said, I am aware that unfortunate things can happen, no matter how vigilant one is. Carrying a She’s Birdie Personal Safety Alarm has helped me feel even safer and more protected.
If you have a friend or family member who loves solo travel or they are going to embark on their first solo journey, I think this alarm is a great gift idea. It emits an extremely loud flashing alarm that will draw the attention of anyone nearby. Unlike pepper spray, this is TSA-approved.
34. First Aid Kit
A first aid kit is a must-have for all travelers. It should be lightweight, waterproof, and filled with plenty of band-aids, pain relievers, and anything else needed to fix a minor ailment. This first aid kit by Yiderbo has over 275 pieces with a wide selection of tools that can be used in the event of an accident or injury.
35. Portable Safe
Many hotels offer in-room safes, but it’s always a good idea to pack an added layer of protection for any valuables. A portable safe will do just that. They are great if your traveler has lodging accommodations in a hostel, or vacation rental home, or will be spending time outdoors.
This portable travel safe by Masterlock is a fantastic gift for the travel enthusiast on your list. It’s large enough to hold a regular-sized cell phone yet small enough to not take up too much space in your luggage. The safe is water-resistant and comes with a cable so you can secure it to your lounge chair or table at the pool.
36. Fake Wedding Bands
Fake wedding bands would be a great gift idea for newlyweds traveling on their honeymoon. I always recommend my clients, leave their expensive jewelry at home, and travel with items they wouldn’t mind losing.
A fake wedding band can also be a great gift for solo travelers too. It will help keep that unwanted attention away, without being flashy.
37. Travel Insurance
Insurance is one of those necessary evils. It’s needed for nearly every aspect of our lives, and travel is no different. Make sure your favorite traveler is protected while they travel and purchase a travel insurance plan for them.
Travel insurance isn’t just for a credit or refund if the trip is canceled. It can also include, lost luggage, delays causing parts of the trip to be missed, and most importantly health insurance. Many people don’t know that the health insurance they have at home does not work in another country. Travel insurance is the most important part of the trip, yet often the most overlooked.
38. Anti-Theft Backpack
As I mentioned earlier, pickpockets are well aware of how to spot a tourist- the running shoes, the clothing representing a favorite sporting team from back home, and the big backpacks are all giant giveaways. Gift your traveler a safer way to travel with an anti-theft backpack, like this one from Pacsafe.
It is made from cut-proof material and has an RFID-blocking pocket to keep credit cards, IDs, and other small valuables safe. The padded main compartment can easily store a 15” laptop and 10” tablet.
The Perfect Travel Gifts for Her
There are so many options to pick from, and, understandably, it can be a little overwhelming to try to pick the perfect gift for the female traveler in your life. The items below are gifts that I recommend giving whether she travels for business or leisure.
39. Travel Jewelry Case
I have tried many different travel jewelry cases, and this one by Bagsmart is by far my favorite. It is much lighter than a leather case, it’s thin enough to not take up a lot of space, and my necklaces don’t tangle. I like that it comes in different sizes and a few different colors too. The best part is the price is extremely reasonable.
40. Hanging Toiletry Bag
My old toiletry bag was a disaster. It was bulky, didn’t have adequate storage space, and wasn’t functional. Then, I was introduced to this bag by Bagsmart is perfect. I can pack more in this toiletry bag than I was in the previous one, and it takes up much less space in my suitcase. I’m not asking how that works, I’m just glad it does. I also love that I can hang it up, so I don’t have to unpack every single thing.
41. Travel Bottles for Toiletries
Many people buy products in bulk, and while that saves money and is convenient at home, it’s impractical to pack liter-size bottles of shampoo and conditioner when traveling. First off, they won’t pass through security in a carry-on and secondly, they’re heavy and take up way too much space. Buying travel sizes in products is also extremely expensive.
The perfect solution is travel-sized toiletry bottles. The bottles by Mrsdry are leakproof, squeezable, and 3oz- making them TSA-approved.
42. Face Masks
I’ve mentioned a few times in this post that flying can be extremely hydrating and hard on your skin. I always travel with hydrating face masks to help combat this issue. These sheet masks would make a great gift for the traveler who is also skincare junkie.
43. Travel Make-up Brush
I love my make-up brushes, but they are quite large and hard to travel with. Thankfully, there are travel-size brushes that work just as well and are nearly half the size. Any beauty enthusiast knows that make-up brushes can get expensive and shelling out the cash for travel-sized ones in addition to a regular-size set, might not be in the budget. Especially, if the budget overflow is reserved for extra trips! Gifting a nice set of travel-sized makeup brushes will certainly be appreciated by the recipient.
44. Sleep Mask
The gift of a good night’s sleep is one that any traveler will be grateful for, and this weighted eye mask by YFONG makes it possible. The weighted beads provide just the right amount of pressure to help relax the nerves around the eyes to provide maximum relaxation while blocking out light to create a completely dark environment. I have one of these on my wish list, as I struggle with falling asleep on long-haul flights. Many reviewers say they can’t sleep without it, and over 2,500 people have given it a 5-star review.
A pashmina is a great gift for travelers because it is extremely versatile. It can function as a beautiful scarf, a light blanket for the plane, a swimsuit cover-up, and a shawl to cover shoulders while touring religious sites.
It’s the perfect accessory for a globe-trotting gal and makes a fantastic gift.
46. T3 Afar Hairdryer
Yes, most hotels come with a hairdryer as an in-room amenity. But if the giftee on your list is particular about her hair, chances are she likes to bring her own. T3 Afar is a more travel-friendly option from the brand’s full-size hairdryers. It still packs the same amount of power, while being lightweight and foldable.
47. Luggage Travel Cup Holder
As a woman, I know how hard it is to juggle all the things. It’s especially hard at a crowded airport carrying a hot latte. And since I wake up before 3:00 a.m. to make the first flight outta town, I refuse to give up the much-needed caffeine. Thankfully, traversing through a busy airport, latte in hand has been made so much easier with the Riemot Luggage Travel Cup Holder. It’s genius.
48. Reef Water Vista Sandals
Chic is not usually a word used to describe water sandals, but the Reef Water Vista Sandal is just that- a chic sandal that also happens to be waterproof and durable. The Best Luxury Travel Gifts
Sometimes it’s nice to give a gift that is a bit of a splurge item. You know you’re gifting something that they will love, but it’s something they wouldn’t purchase for themselves. The gifts below are a nice mix of unique, luxurious, and a little glamorous, and perfect for when you want a gift that will WOW.

A wine suitcase would be a great gift for anyone who loves to explore the different wine regions of the world. Having a specially designed suitcase to bring wine home will save your favorite traveler a bunch in shipping fees. My favorite is the VinGardeValise which safely holds up to 12 bottles of wine and can be checked just like any other bag at the airport. I take it with me every time I go to Napa.
I am not much of a souvenir person. For me, the photos I take are my souvenirs. I like to get them printed and framed to hang on my walls. If the traveler in your life, also loves photography and prefers experiences to things, this camera would be a great gift.

The Apple iPad takes up little space and is extremely light. As a reader, I enjoy being able to have all of my books available to me on my tablet, and not have to haul them around.
64. Bose Noise Canceling Headphones
As I’ve mentioned sleeping on a plane is tough, partly because it’s hard to get comfortable. Another reason is because of the noise- whether it’s the sound of the plane, someone snoring, a baby crying, or all the above. These noise-canceling headphones by Bose are the perfect solution. Great ideas, I have some travel friends who love to travel and I’m sure they will love some of these.
I saw at least three items I could use before our next trip abroad, and probably ten items my wife would consider essential. Thanks for the ideas.
Remarkable number of items you have listed that I do not need to search on my own time. I’m especially interested in the white noise machine, the relaxation device, the moonstone crystal, the door alarm and the carbon monoxide detector. Thank you
