U.S. Virgin Islands
The US Virgin Islands are in the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, and because they are a US territory, you can travel there without needing a passport. It’s the perfect place to go if your dream vacation includes warm sunshine, pristine beaches, snorkeling, and a laid-back vibe.
The three main islands are St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix. Each island has its own personality. St. John is great for nature-loving couples. Couples who want a getaway that’s equal parts romance and luxury will be drawn to St. Thomas. St. Croix is a little rugged and appeals to couples who are looking for adventure.
No matter which island(s) you choose for your romantic getaway, your itinerary should include plenty of time on the glistening waters. Take a romantic sunset
Another tropical destination that you can travel to without needing a passport is Hawaii. A trip to Hawaii requires a lot of thought and care. I always recommend discussing the type of experiences you want to have with your significant other. Doing this upfront will help you decide which island(s) to see.
There are 8 main islands to explore, each offering a unique experience. The most popular islands are Oahu, Maui, the Big Island of Hawaii, and Kauai. You could plan your whole vacation around one island or island hop. Either way, you will have an unforgettable experience.
For city lovers and social butterflies, Oahu has the perfect vibe. Think high-energy nightclubs, bars with live music, shopping, and plenty of dining options.
Kuai is the perfect place for nature lovers. Its lush landscape is a tropical paradise with mountains and rainforests. It is less developed than the other islands, making it more peaceful and relaxing.
Maui is the best island for couples who are looking for a nice mix of everything. Here you’ll find a mix of nightlife, stunning beaches, and luxury resort.
The rich history, of the Big Island, has been very well preserved. From museums to historic sites and National Parks, it’s the best island for couples looking for exploration and adventure. Even though it is the largest island it is relatively easy to navigate, there is only one main highway! So don’t worry too much about getting lost.
While planning a trip to the Hawaiian Islands does not require a passport it does require you to plan in well in advance. It’s a very popular destination for U.S. citizens and travelers from all over the world.
Napa Valley, California
For couples who love food and wine, one of the best places for a romantic getaway is Napa Valley. From Michelin-star restaurants, award-winning wines, and the most incredible views it’s easy to see why it makes a great romantic getaway.
Napa has over 400 wineries to taste from, and that’s not including tasting rooms. Before you go, make sure to do your research on which wineries you want to visit. It’s also important to make your reservations ahead of time, as most wineries offer tastings by appointment only.
Outside of wine tastings, Napa offers plenty of other romantic activities, like sunrise hot air balloon rides over the Valley. Another fun outdoor option would be to rent bikes from Downtown Napa and bike to Yountville.
There are plenty of romantic boutique hotel options too. If you and your significant other are interested in setting up a spa day, I recommend finding a hotel that has a spa on the property. Some luxurious options include Bardessono and North Block, both located in Yountville.
No trip to Napa is complete without indulging in some incredible food. For an out-of-this-world meal with the most stunning views, make reservations at The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil. If you are able, make your reservations before dusk so you can watch the sunset over the Valley.
For sun, sand, scuba diving, and sunset strolls, look no further than the Florida Keys. The adventure begins as you and your partner make the drive from Miami to your island destination. You’ll get picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico all at the same time. It’s an unforgettable experience.
Each island has its own unique vibe. For example, Key Largo is perfect for couples who enjoy water activities, such as snorkeling and diving. It is home to some of the best coral reefs in the U.S. Sunset cruises and glass bottom boats are also a big part of the experience here.
Couples who are looking for a romantic vacation that also includes a vibrant nightlife should stay in Key West. Duval Street is Key West’s version of Bourbon Street, and where all the best bars are located. Key West is also known for its stunning beaches and the sunset celebration that takes place every night in Mallory Square.
For a truly luxurious and extremely romantic getaway, book your stay at Little Palm Island Resort in the Lower Keys. The four-acre private island resort is only accessible by wooden boat or seaplane. It’s an adults-only, luxury resort where TVs and phones are not allowed. Guests are encouraged to indulge in isolation and relax in paradise.
Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston would be the perfect place for a romantic getaway for history-loving couples. It’s full of old-world charm, from historic homes and landmarks to cobblestone streets and stunning churches. A guided tour will give you and your partner a deeper understanding of the city’s rich history (there are even evening ghost tours if that’s your thing).
Highlights of a romantic getaway could also include major tourist attractions like walking down Rainbow Row or visiting the Pineapple Fountain at Charleston Waterfront Park. You could also take in the city from the water via a sunset
Charleston has become known as a foodie city and there are many fantastic restaurants featuring Lowcountry classics. Husk is one of the most well-known restaurants in Charleston. And reservations are a must. The menu changes frequently, based on what’s in season and it’s always exceptional.
New York, New York
A perfect destination for couples who thrive in a fast-paced city is none other than New York City. From walking together through the beautiful parks to enjoying the skyline views from a rooftop bar, the Big Apple is full of ways to woo your significant other.
Plan a classic date night- dinner and a show. Have dinner first, many of the restaurants in the Midtown area offer pre-theater seating or pre-theater dinner menus. After dinner enjoy the magic of a Broadway show.
Your itinerary could also include a romantic yacht
Another fantastic East Coast option is Nantucket. This tiny island is an idyllic spot for a romantic vacation with your partner, especially for couples who love the charm of New England.
Nantucket is a beautiful island, but very different than a Caribbean Island. You’ll be swapping palm trees and coconuts for beautiful hydrangea bushes and picturesque lighthouses. Spend your days biking around the island or soaking up the sun at one of the pristine beaches. Check out Bartlett’s Farm and grab some items for a picnic.
The island has some of the most unbelievable fresh seafood. To really impress your sweetheart, reserve an outdoor table for two at Straight Wharf. The menu changes daily to reflect the freshest ingredients of the season. It’s one of the best spots on Nantucket, so make reservations far in advance. After dinner, take a moonlit stroll down the wharf.
Swap beautiful beaches for majestic mountains and head to Vail, Colorado for your next romantic getaway. Vali is a great place for couples who enjoy outdoor activities. No matter the season, there are plenty of fun things to do.
In the winter your days can be spent skiing or snowboarding. Your evenings can be curled up together in front of a roaring fire or soaking in a hot tub overlooking the snow-capped mountains.
In the warmer weather, Vail is a great place for hiking, golfing and mountain biking. In the summer, Vail has a great lineup of live music events, featuring internationally recognized artists.
Take some time to wander through Vail Village. You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a European Village. There are plenty of shops where you can find everything from high-end apparel to locally sourced artisan goods. The restaurant scene is impressive. For a romantic meal, enjoy the candlelit ambiance and traditional French cuisine at Left Bank.
Asheville, North Carolina
Nature-loving couples will love a vacation to Asheville, North Carolina. It has a small town vibe and offers plenty of fun activities.
The Blue Ridge Mountains are perfect for day hikers and experienced hikers alike. There’s an abundance of trails to explore, and all of them will come with awe-inspiring views. Biking is also popular. You could choose to explore the funky downtown area of Ashville on a bike tour or ride into the wilderness on a mountain bike. Other popular outdoor activities include horseback riding, fishing and golf.
Asheville has a growing food scene, they call Foodtopia. Their mission is to provide diners with the most unique and memorable food and drink experiences. Such a cool way to share their love of local establishments. For a romantic dinner with an impressive view, Sunset Terrace at The Omni Grove Park Inn is hands down the place. After dinner, head to downtown Asheville. You’ll find there is a vibrant nightlife, with something for all tastes, cocktail bars, dance parties, dive bars, and karaoke.
Since Puerto Rico is a U.S. Territory, you can travel there without a passport. Couples who enjoy romance paired with adventure will find that Puerto Rico is the perfect choice. From kayaking under the stars to cliff jumping, this tiny island has a lot to offer.
One of the coolest activities you can do in Puerto Rico is an evening kayak or paddle board tour. Under the light of the night sky, you’ll paddle out into the bay where bioluminescent organisms live and experience the glowing water firsthand.
The bay is very close to Old San Juan. After the kayak tour, you could dance the night away at one of the salsa clubs like La FacrotiaS.
A trip to Puerto Rico would not be complete without visiting El Yunque National Forest, it’s the only rainforest in the US Forest System. And an experience adventure-seeking couples must have. You’ll be hiking, cliff jumping, sliding down waterfalls, and immersing yourself in the natural beauty of the forest.
Sedona is considered a spiritual Mecca, not just in the United States, but worldwide. For couples who want to reconnect on a deeper and more spiritual level, Sedona is the perfect place.
Couples who visit Sedona can participate in many different healing and renewal activities, like meditation and yoga. There are several different guided options available, or you could download an app.
Another great option for couples looking for a sense of renewal would be booking a couples spa day. Sedona has many luxury resort and spas to choose from. L’Auberge de Sedona is one of the best and is just a half mile from downtown.
There are also many great places to hike in Sedona. The hike at Cathedral Rock is one of the highest-rated trails in Red Rock State Park. It is challenging but worth it, especially if you’re hiking to watch the sunset. Another reason Cathedral Rock is so special is that it is one of the sites of an energetic Vortex.
Mackinac Island, Michigan
No cars or motorized vehicles are allowed on Mackinac Island. Neither are chain restaurants, hotel franchises, or large department stores. The charming character and beautiful scenery will transport you back in time for a truly special and romantic getaway.
Horse-drawn carriages helmed by gentlemen in top hats rule the streets in this quaint town. Visitors can also opt to explore by foot or bicycle, but e-bikes are not allowed. For an island that has less than 4 square miles of land, there is a lot to explore.
For outdoorsy couples, hike at one of the many parks, like Headlands International State Park. It has over 5 miles of trails for hikers to enjoy. The park grounds are open 24 hours a day, and visitors are encouraged to stay into the night for the best viewing opportunities.
Another must-do activity on Mackinac Island is to peruse Mackinaw Crossings. It’s a Victorian-inspired shopping center filled with specialty shops, local cafes and restaurants and a small movie theater. Make sure to pick up some fudge. It’s an island specialty, during high season, they make 10,000 pounds daily!
For an unforgettable experience, book your stay at the Grand Hotel. It’s an iconic hotel that was featured in the romantic movie, Somewhere in Time starring Christopher Reve and Jane Seymour.
Amelia Island, Florida
For couples seeking a mix of historic charm and luxury, Amelia Island is an ideal choice for a romantic getaway. The best part is, that no long international flight is needed for U.S. citizens. The island is located off the northeast coast of Florida and only 30 minutes from Jacksonville.
If you and your partner adopt the saying “Beach Days are the Best Days,” you will enjoy spending your time on the white sand beaches. There are over 13 miles of beaches. Couples who want to get away from the crowds of Main Beach should check out North Beach. North Beach doesn’t have as many amenities, like water sports and other activities, but it is more peaceful and relaxing.
Active couples who are seeking a luxury resort experience will want to stay at Omni Amelia Island. The Omni is an oceanfront resort community. There are 54 holes of golf, tennis, and pickleball courts and over 20 pools. They also have a beautiful fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment, including 2 Peloton bikes.
Make time to check out downtown Fernandina Beach. There are over 50 blocks of shops, galleries, and restaurants to explore.
San Diego, California
One of the best things about San Diego is the perfect weather. Pair that with beautiful beaches, great food, and a bunch of fun things to do, and it’s easy to see why San Diego is a great place to go for a romantic getaway.
Animal-loving couples will love checking out the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Especially the Safari Park. It honestly feels like you are on an African safari. But you don’t need your passport for this experience.
You cannot go to San Diego without enjoying the sunsets. The view from Sunset Cliffs is hands down the best. The sunset can be experienced from your car, but it’s worth it to hike the 3-mile trail. It’s a fairly flat and easy hike and would be perfect to do before heading to Duke’s in La Jolla for dinner.
Another romantic activity in San Diego is taking a sunset
A romantic getaway to Vermont is always a good idea no matter the time of year, but especially in the fall. The fall foliage is an explosion of color that cannot be matched.
You could stay at a luxury hotel or a romantic inn, like the Hermitage Inn in West Dover. The Inn was originally built in the 1800s and now has 15 guest rooms. Foodies will appreciate the Piedmont Inspired Food & Wine Experience- it is 100% worth the splurge. Couples will cozy up in private gondolas as they dine on delicacies and sip wine pairings representative of the Piedmont region of Italy.
Another romantic activity is to pack a picnic lunch and enjoy it with your sweetheart Lakeside. Hike to one of the many tranquil lakes in the state. Along the way, see if you can spot one of the covered bridges. There are over 100 19th-century covered bridges in the state.

beautiful photos! all on my bucket list! oh, and go Chiefs!
I think you nailed it there. Some obvious romantic spots (obvious to me anyway) and some I would have not though of. Vermont in the fall, heavenly!! NYC might not be on the top of everyone’s list of romantic getaways until they have had a carriage ride through Central Park!!
These are all great options depending on the time of year you want to go. As a Chicagoan, I just visited Puerto Rico in January, and the Carribean Sun was everything!
This is such a fun list – I genuinely don’t know which place I would visit first when I finally make my way to the US! I suppose New York is always the go to, but I’m slowly falling in love with Charleston😊
Great list. Love the photos too. I’ve been to most, but the Keys and Charleston are still on my travel to do list!
I LOVE HAWAII!!! I feel like it’s not only for romantic getaways but for all types of travelers. Although I would say that Vermont is the most romantic getaway on this list. Thanks for sharing!!
