Spring Break Cancun Dates: The Ultimate Guide for 2024

by | Feb 4, 2024 | Beach lovers, International, Travel Tips | 20 comments

The spring break Cancun dates are quickly approaching. This post covers everything you need to know to have the best spring break experience.

At a Glance: Spring Break Cancun Dates

Cancun has some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico and is just a short flight for many living in the United States. It’s easy to see why it’s become such a popular destination for spring breakers.

This year, the Cancun spring break begins February 24th and will last until early April. The peak season for college students will be March 4th-17th. If you are looking for a spring break experience that is more relaxing and family-friendly than poolside parties and loud music, then this post is for you. As a certified travel advisor and having visited the Cancun area many times I have some excellent options. Keep reading for how you to have the best time in Cancun this spring break season.

What to Expect for Your Spring Break in Cancun

From the end of February through the beginning of April, Cancun becomes the perfect place for young people and families to warm up from the cold winter weather. This time of year, Cancun sees temps in the mid 80’s. The sun is shining bright and

The Best All Inclusive Hotels for a Peaceful Spring Break Trip

One of the most important parts of your Cancun spring break trip will be choosing the right all inclusive resort. For a more peaceful and relaxing experience, you will want to stay away from the heart of the hotel zone.

Playa del Carmen and Playa Mujeres are popular destinations in the Riviera Maya. Especially for this time of year, as they are far enough away from the party zone.

Moon Palace- Family Friendly

Moon Palace is a fantastic family-friendly property. It’s 3 properties within one- Nizuc, Sunrise and the newest property The Grand. Guests staying at the luxury property, The Grand, can access the full resort. While guests staying at Nizuc and Sunrise are unable to enter The Grand.

There are many activities for spring breakers of all ages. From snorkeling to mini golf and pickleball to lounging poolside, everyone will be entertained. Moon Palace also has 18 different buffet and a la carte restaurants to choose from, so even the pickiest of eaters will be satisfied.

Moon Palace is located in close proximity to the airport too. Just a quick 15-minute drive, and you’re ready to start your spring break vacation.

Secrets Moxché- Adults Only

cancun hotel spring break Moxché

For adults looking to have a spring break getaway, Secrets Moxché will give you an unforgettable experience. It is a AAA 5-Diamond all-inclusive property in Playa del Carmen. It is located just 10 minutes away from Quinta Avenida and has very easy access to many different excursions for people looking to get off the resort property.

With 11 different restaurants, there are plenty of dining options. They also have several different bars including Dark Horse Sports Bar and a secret speakeasy, Gypsy. The quality of the food and beverage is fabulous, and the service is impeccable.

Moxché has several different pools for guests to choose from, and each has its own vibe. There are small man-made cenotes throughout the property that offer a romantic atmosphere, a large infinity pool with live music and a lively swim-up bar, and other smaller pools that are quieter and more relaxing.

Atelier- Adults Only

Atelier a great spring break Cancun hotel

One of the most popular adults-only all-inclusive resorts in the Riviera Maya is Atelier Playa Mujeres. It is located inside a gated community about 40 minutes from the airport and 25 minutes from the party center, the Cancun strip.

The Atelier is the best hotel option for adults looking for a relaxing and upscale atmosphere. The design is stunning and inspired by contemporary Mexican art. They even have art classes where guests can paint and create on their own.

One of the reasons the Atelier is so popular is because of the quality of the food. There are 13 different restaurants, and all are amazing. Pro-tip: reservations are required for dinner, make them when you arrive at check-in. The bars at Atelier are equally impressive and each one has a different vibe. I really loved the rooftop bar in the evenings, it felt like I was in an exclusive cocktail lounge and the craft cocktails were all delicious

Atelier sits on a beautiful stretch of white sand with plenty of cabanas, beach loungers, and beach bars. Beach lovers will also appreciate the limited sargassum. There is also a gentleman on the beach who will take you for a free ride on the Hobie cat or kayak (don’t forget to tip).

Dreams Playa Mujeres- Family Friendly

Dreams Playa Mujeres is a very popular all-inclusive resort for families traveling to Cancun. This AAA-Four Diamond all-inclusive property is located within a gated community and just a short trip from the Cancun airport. It has a fun and upbeat atmosphere, but don’t worry spring breakers are not allowed.

There are so many kinds of activities, from the water park and beach or pool volleyball to fun table games and live shows. Dreams also has Kids Clubs for different age groups, so the kids can hang out with people their age. And if the parents want a date night, they have in-room child care.

For the best experience, splurge on an upgrade to the Preferred Club. The rooms are located in premier areas of the property, you will enjoy upgraded amenities and have access to privileged areas of the resort and beach. Preferred Club guests also have access to the lazy river and receive special concierge service.

Hotel Xcaret- Family Friendly

spring break cancun hotel Xcaret

Hotel Xcaret is the perfect spring break resort for the uber-active family. Preteens and teenagers will especially have a blast, but I do not recommend it for families with kiddos under 5 as there aren’t many activities geared toward their age group.

It’s located in Playa del Carmen and has an All-Fun Inclusive concept. Guests of Hotel Xcaret have access and transportation to all of the Grupo Xcaret park, as well as typical all-inclusive amenities with unlimited food and beverages. 7 theme parks offer different experiences like snorkeling and swimming on the beach or in a cenote. There are adventure parks with rope swings and zip-lining. There is even a theme park called Xplore Fuego, it is open in the evenings and features torch-lit paths, paddle rafts, zip lines, and BBQ.

The resort itself also has so much to offer. There are obstacle courses, hidden rivers with waterslides, 13 pools, and 11 different restaurants. It is safe to say a week of spring break will not be enough to experience everything Hotel Xcaret has to offer!

The Best All-Inclusive Resorts for Spring Breakers

There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to picking the best resort for your Cancun spring break. For spring breakers looking for that true college spring break experience, then the following 5 resorts are just for you.

Grand Oasis Cancun

Grand Oasis Cancun is the best party resort for college students going to Cancun Spring Break

If you’re looking for a massive resort with a non-stop party, The Grand Oasis is where you want to stay. It is the number one Spring Break resort in the world and is made famous for its MTV Spring Break Beach Parties.

It is an all-inclusive resort with 8 restaurants and 8 bars, including 2 swim-up bars. World-class djs and live music will be blasting music for their guests all day. Celebrity guests even make surprise appearances, Snoop Dog was even a past performer.

Beach Palace

Beach Palace is a sister property to Moon Palace, and while it is a much smaller property it still offers the same Palace Resort amenities and comfortable rooms. With 4 dining options, a full spa and fitness center and a beautiful beach it is hard to think about leaving the resort. However, it is in a great location on the Cancun strip and very close to the nightlife and party scene.

Riu Cancun

Just minutes from the party zone is Riu Cancun. Riu is an all inclusive resort with 3 pools, a buffet restaurant, and its own nightclub, Pacha. Spring breakers will love the white sandy beach and turquoise waters at this Mediterranean-themed property.

Hard Rock Hotel Cancun

Hard Rock Hotel Cancun party resort for spring breakers

Hard Rock Hotel Cancun is an awesome resort for college students looking for a Vegas-style spring break. An all inclusive stay at the Hard Rock offers more of a luxury spring break experience. The quality of service, drinks, and food is a bit more elevated than other resorts geared toward spring breakers. Drinks are also flowing 24/7 and of course, there is a big focus on providing awesome music, it is the Hard Rock after all.

There is an infinity pool that overlooks the Caribbean Sea and plenty of pool parties with international performers.

Krystal Cancun

The Krystal Cancun is another top choice for college students looking for a resort with a party vibe. There are 3 a la carte restaurants and 3 different bars including a swim up bar. Though there is an onsite nightclub, many young Americans choose this resort because it is super close to the hottest nightclubs on the strip like Mandala and Coco Bongos.

The Best Excursions in Cancun

There are so many different and fun excursions for spring break goers to experience. As a travel advisor, I always tell my clients to consider where their resort is, when choosing off-property excursions because drive time will play a big role. With that said, these are some of the most popular excursions.

Chichén Itzá

Spring break Cancun at Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is the most famous ancient Mayan ruin site in Mexico. It is also the furthest to get to from anywhere in the Riviera Maya. The site is the largest and most impressive of the Mayan ruins. If you are choosing to do only one day trip during your spring break trip, this is the one to do.

While most of the buildings are now mounds, there are over thirty that can still be seen by tourists. The remaining ruins are very well preserved and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are open daily from 8 am – 5 pm. My recommendation is to get there as early as possible to avoid the crowds and hire a private tour guide.

Isla Mujeres

For people staying in the Playa Mujeres and downtown Cancun, a day trip to Isla Mujeres would be a fun day trip. The ferry ride is about a half hour each way. Once you arrive on the island, rent a golf cart and explore on your own. There is a lot to do!

The major attraction is Playa Norte, which is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico. There are plenty of beach bars with cold drinks and live music. I like to get a chilled coconut; it’s so refreshing on a hot afternoon.

If you like to snorkel, check out MUSA. It’s an underwater museum and such a unique experience.

Cenotes

Spring Break Cancun Cenotes Great Experience

Visiting a cenote is another must-do activity on your Cancun spring break vacation. Cenotes are natural sinkholes where the ceiling of the cave has collapsed either partially or completely. There are four different kinds- open (no ceiling), semi-open, closed, and lastly dry (dried-out cenote).

A visit to a cenote could be as simple as visiting a stand-alone cenote like Cenote Azul or Gran Cenote. Or visiting a cenote park. Some of the cenotes also have activities like zip lines, platform jumping, kayaking, and more. Others are just for swimming and snorkeling.

Some fantastic tours include Mayan ruin tours and cenotes in one package. I highly recommend these as you get to experience a lot of the Mayan culture all at once.

The Spring Break Best Bars and Nightclubs

Coco Bongo where the college students party

Cancun is one of the top spring break destinations in the world due in part to the wild parties that take place. College students from all over come to let loose and have a good time at hot spots in the hotel zone. Keep reading for the best spring break bars and nightclubs.

Coco Bongo

Coco Bongos is a must for young people spring breaking in Cancun. It’s known for over-the-top performances, acrobats, smoke and light shows, and music that drives partygoers to the dance floor. Doors open at 10:30 and the party goes until 3:30 am every night of the week.

Señor Frogs

Señor Frogs is a restaurant/bar by day and a nightclub by night. No matter what time you go, it’s a blast. They have special VIP theme nights; Wednesday is a Foam Party and Sunday is a Glow Party. One of the best deals is to purchase a VIP package that includes an open bar.

Mandala Beach Club

Mandala Beach Club gives spring breakers a unique experience because it’s an outdoor nightclub located on the beach. It has multiple pools open for swimming (even at night) and cabanas equipped with personal sound systems. Partiers will be able to swim and dance the night away under the starlit sky.

Tips for Spring Break in Cancun

Cancun Spring Break

When planning a trip to Cancun for Spring Break, there are some important things to keep in mind. First, make sure to get travel insurance. Travel insurance protects your trip and protects you while you are traveling. It’s an often-overlooked purchase but is absolutely necessary.

Second, make sure to take copies of important travel documents with you in your carry-on, and leave them in the safe at your hotel. I also recommend leaving copies with a trusted friend or family member at home.

Lastly, make sure to pack plenty of sunscreen, and use it! Yes, it can be bought at the resort, but it will cost a small fortune, so pack extra just in case.

If you need help planning your spring break trip, schedule a consultation. I’d love to help!
