The Best Wineries in Weston Missouri

If you are looking for a Midwest getaway, look no further than Weston, Missouri. It’s become a popular destination due in part to its ability to transport you back in time. The historic main street is lined with surprising shops, restaurants and cafés. Some of the area’s most popular festivals are held here. Like the Weston Whiskey Fest, Weston Roots Music Festival, and an Apple Fest.

Perhaps one of the most notable things about Weston is the wide variety of wines that are produced here. I know what you’re thinking, “Wines? From Missouri?” As a lover of California wine, I had the same exact thought. In an effort to expand my wine horizons, and enjoy a weekend outside of Kansas City, my boyfriend booked the trip. Our mission was to eat and drink our way through the quaint town. Mission accomplished. Keep reading for more information about the fun things to do and all the best wineries in Weston Missouri.

Pirtle Winery

Pirtle winery in Weston Missouri

Our first stop was at Pirtle Winery. Pirtle Winery has been around since 1978. The tasting room is located close to downtown Weston. Fun fact- the tasting room is a former Lutheran Evangelical Church built in 1867 by German immigrants. Today, it’s a lively place where visitors can taste wine and purchase items from their gift shop.

The wine host was lovely. She was very friendly and knowledgeable, providing us with so much information about Pirtle, the wines, and the city of Weston. They had a huge wine list! Everything from Missouri’s most notable varietal, Norton to hard cider. And several award-winning wines. Our wine tasting consisted of 5 different pours, and we could pick from anything on the list. We both prefer dry wines, like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon and chose wines most similar. Of the wines we tasted, our favorite wine was the Citrine followed by the Alhambra. We ended up getting a couple of bottles of each to take home.

Next to the tasting room is an enchanting vine-covered wine garden. Several groups were sitting under the vines enjoying their wine. We would have stayed but had already committed to lunch and another tasting at a different location. Continue reading to find out where we went next!

TerraVox Tasting Room and Green Dirt Farm

wine tasting in Weston Missouri

One of my favorite new restaurants in Kansas City, is Green Dirt on Oak. So naturally we had to stop by the original Green Dirt in Weston. Green Dirt is the place to go for cheese lovers. They specialize in sheep milk cheese and have a variety of cow’s milk cheese.  In addition to the gourmet foods available, Green Dirt is also where the TerraVox tasting room is located.

The tasting room was not open when we went, but we were able to order a tasting flight when we purchased our lunch. We each were given very healthy-sized pours of three different wines, Traminette, Sunny Slope Rosé and the Norton. Green Dirt has plenty of outdoor seating. We chose to enjoy our wines and lunch at one of the picnic tables out front.

TerraVox produces superior quality wines from 100% estate grown grapes. We both prefer red wines so, it’s no surprise that the Norton was our favorite. However, I really did enjoy the Rosé. It was completely different than the Rosés I usually enjoy and had a darker color with a more complex expression.

Our lunch was just as fabulous as the wine. The cheese board was perfect with 3 different sheep’s milk cheeses- original, black pepper, garlic herb, fruit, nuts, honey, and jam. We also tried Green Dirt’s take on a Cuban sandwich. It was also fantastic, warm, gooey and cheesy. Honestly, I wouldn’t call it a Cuban sandwich though, it was more of a delicious hot ham and cheese. Of course, we couldn’t leave without trying some of the strawberry ice cream, which was just as wonderful as everything else!

Weston Wine Company

Weston Wine Company Wine tasting

Weston Wine Company is a cute wine-tasting room located on Weston’s historic Main Street. It’s a very popular stop for bachelorette parties, birthday parties, and other large groups. The tasting room is small, so it’s a good idea to make reservations online beforehand, as they’re first-come, first-served. We made our reservations a week before and saved a few bucks.

Weston Wine Company offers a unique tasting experience in that the wines they offer are not necessarily from Missouri, Kansas or a surrounding area. They have an ever-changing wine list, based on what they’re able to get from their supplier. The list is quite large and has many different red and white wines to choose from. The tasting included three wines and a mini cupcake to pair with each wine.

Riverwood Winery

So Riverwood is not technically in Weston. It’s a lovely winery, just 25 minutes outside of the city limits, but close enough that it’s a “must-visit” if you’re heading to Weston. The tasting room is a repurposed elementary school building, and tastings are on a first-come, first-served basis. In fact, they don’t take reservations for parties of 9 or less. Don’t let that deter you though, there is plenty of seating! Riverwood has two different wine tasting options, 4 wines for $5 or 8 wines for $10. Additionally, they offer whiskey tastings and have over 570 whiskeys and spirits to choose from.

Their wine list isn’t as large as the other wineries I’ve mentioned previously, but the wines are fantastic. They offer white, red, fruit and dessert wines. All are handcrafted using the traditional methods of winemaking. Besides the great wine, one of the best parts of the tasting experience is the live music they have all weekend long. In my opinion, the winery has a really good vibe, partly because the best family friendly winery around. They have a ton of outdoor space for the kiddos to run around, delicious food, and plenty of non-alcoholic beverages. Also, if you’re looking to host a private event, they have plenty of event space.

Weston Brewing Company

Wine tasting at Weston Brewing Company

If you need a break from wine, check out the Weston Brewing Company for a brewery tour and beer tasting. They are available on Saturdays and include tours of the current brewery, the historic underground cellars and a tasting. It’s not just a brewery though, it also includes a restaurant, hotel and inn and is the home of O’Malley’s Irish Pub.

One of the reasons we chose Weston for our weekend getaway, other than to taste wines, was to spend the evening hanging out at O’Malley’s. Neither of us had been before, but we heard stories of the live music that’s played 4 stories underground. We intended to eat at the restaurant, America Bowman, but ended up finding a little BBQ place, Tin Kitchen instead.

It had stormed the night before, and we were advised that it was pretty wet, which makes sense. It’s 4 stories underground, after all! It wasn’t too bad though, and the music was really great, with acoustic guitar players rocking out hits from the 80s, 90s and today. It’s just my scene. On the second floor, a gentleman was playing traditional Irish folk music. It was such a cool scene and I can see why it’s such a popular place to visit.

Other Things to Do in Weston

Weston hosts a variety of activities throughout the year, so make sure to check the calendar for upcoming events. As mentioned above, Weston hosts some of the popular festivals in the Missouri area.

Weston Roots Music Festival

One of them is the Weston Roots Music Festival. We missed it this year, but it’s on the calendar for next year. The festival is a one day event that provides a diverse music experience for all who attend. Weston Brewing Company hosts outdoor mainstage events, food trucks and beverage vendors. Smaller more intimate music performances are scattered throughout the rest of the city.

Historic Weston Orchard

Weston Orchard and Vineyard is fun for the whole family. It’s a place where you can pick fresh, seasonal fruit, the kids can play, and the adults can taste wine. They have plenty of house-made concoctions, like cider slushies, house-made apple cider, kettle corn, pies, and donuts. Various fruits can be picked from May through November. In October the pumpkin patch opens.

I love wine tastings – you are always in for a surprise. Being from Europe, I have not yet tasted much of the American wine. To be honest, they have kind of a bad reputation here. The wineries seem to be nestled in wonderful landscapes most of the time and, I like the idea of wine and mini cupcakes.
